What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is the firm, but gentle, massage of the reflexes on both feet and is an ancient and gentle form of healing that has been in existence for centuries. Reflexology stimulates reflexes throughout the body, since all body systems are accurately reflected in the feet. Touching a specific reflex on the feet can evoke a favourable, involuntary response in the corresponding part of the body. Reflexology is used to return the body to its natural balance and so promote healing. This natural therapy is a simple, safe, non-invasive treatment which is now practised worldwide.
Benefits of Reflexology
Reflexology reduces stress and induces deep relaxation
Stress is a part of our everyday lives and is neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad’. However, it becomes a problem when it is not managed well – especially stress resulting from problems, frustrations, worry etc. When we are under too much stress, the body’s defences break down and we become more susceptible to illness and disease. It has been estimated that over 75% of all illness is stress-related.
Reflexology reduces stress by generating a deep, tranquil
relaxation
This in turn enables the body to balance itself and allow healing energy to flow smoothly and gently throughout the body. Every part of the body is operated by messages carried backwards and forwards along neural pathways. These neural pathways are living tissue and can be adversely affected by stress, which leads to messages being received slowly or incorrectly. Reflexology stimulates more than 7000 nerves through massage of the feet and this encourages the opening and clearing of neural pathways, resulting in a more efficient and effective messaging system.
Reflexology improves circulation
Stress and tension tighten up the cardiovascular system and restrict blood flow. This in turn restricts the amount of oxygen and nutrients that can be transported to all the cells in the body. By reducing stress and tension, reflexology allows the cardiovascular system to relax and return the flow of nutrients and oxygen to its optimum level.
Reflexology cleanses the body of toxins and impurities
The body has built in mechanisms for cleansing itself – the lymphatic, excretory and integumentary systems. If these do not function correctly, toxins and waste build up in the body. By deep relaxation of the body, reflexology encourages all these systems to function more efficiently, thereby increasing the rate of removal and elimination of waste products.
Reflexology balances the whole system
For the body to be healthy everything must work together – the technical term for this is homeostasis. If one part is not functioning correctly, other parts will suffer and the result will be illness or disease. Reflexology helps to balance the body which encourages all the systems to work to their optimum performance. This results in the body running smoothly, with all its parts contributing synergistically.
Reflexology revitalises energy
Energy circulates consciously and unconsciously throughout the body on a physical, emotional and mental level. There is also energy of the spirit which is just as important to our overall feeling of well being as the physical or mental energy. Energy can be depleted by many external and internal influences and needs to be revitalised. By relaxing and opening up the energy pathways, reflexology revitalises the body and supplies it with energy on all levels.
Reflexology is preventative health care
Our immune systems only function at their optimum levels when a person successfully manages the stressful situations of everyday life. However, the vast majority of us are not able to do this all the time. Our immune systems become weakened and we are not able to fight off illness. Reflexology can help build up our immune systems and maintain them at their optimum performance – our defences are therefore able to ward off illnesses and disease.
Reflexology stimulates creativity and productivity
Very few of us can perform at our best if we feel sluggish and tired. By reducing tensions and calming the mind, reflexology is able to restores mental alertness and improves our attention span. When our mind is calm we are able to work longer and with greater clarity.
