What is Therapeutic and Holistic Massage?
Massage is a form of soft tissue manipulation that has developed over thousands of years and has been used throughout this time to restore and promote health. It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole or part of the body and promotes suppleness in the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress.
Massage is beneficial to all body systems and is a natural and effective way to treat both physical and psychological conditions.
What are the Effects and Benefits of Massage?
Stimulates blood circulation and improves tissue condition
As the hands press the tissues and move along the muscles they increase
arterial blood flow and venous return, especially when using deeper strokes. This speeds up the metabolic rate and improves the
condition of tissues.
Massage also stimulates lymphatic circulation and drainage – lymphatic circulation
is increased in the same way as blood circulation. This prevents
stagnation of fluid in tissues and prevents toxic build up.
Improves the condition of the skin
Massage increases blood flow, the resulting dilation of capillaries in the skin improves nourishment, whilst movement and friction of the hands speed up skin cell renewal.
Promotes physical and mental relaxation
Increased warmth, generated by increased blood flow and slow, calming rhythmical movements, help to promote relaxation. Gentle massage is especially renowned for producing sensations of deep relaxation and inducing sleep.
Improves the condition of muscle tissue
Kneading mobilises tissues, aiding their extensibility, flexibility and elasticity. It also helps loosen tight fascia and adhesions and increases muscle nourishment.
Reduces stiffness and pain
Massage improves tissue mobility and nourishment which relaxes muscles and reduces stiffness and pain.
Stimulates bone nourishment
Deep tissue massage presses tissue against bone, stimulating blood supply to the periosteum, which is the external covering of the bone. This increases delivery of nutrients to the bone.
Softens adipose tissue and aids the elimination of cellulite
Massage helps to soften areas of hard adipose (fatty) tissue.
